Is my chihuahua’s dry, flaky skin caused by his food?

Hi Cindy. I am new to this site and I thought since you have been a chihuahua owner for 10 years that you may be able to help me with a question I have. I just became the owner of a 14 week old Chihuahua that weighs approx. 3 lbs..and is VERY cute and sweet..he has became my baby. LoL. But I have noticed some dry skin and some white flakes in his hair. I think this is dandruff and really I don’t know what to do for him. I feed him only Science Diet (Dry Food) which doesnt have a lot of oil in it? Could that be a problem? I havent bathed him once since I have had him, all I’ve done is dampened a cloth and then dried him and brushed his hair afterwards. I brushed his hair thinking the flakes would get better but they showed up more. What could I do? Any help and or comments would be greatly appreciated.

What you are describing sounds like dandruff to me. I recently wrote an article on chihuahua dandruff that should be helpful to you.

Science Diet is not the best food you can feed your chihuahua because they use meat by-products, you’ll see that in the ingredients list. Meat by-product includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low temperature fatty tissue, and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. Notice it does NOT include muscle meat. It can also include “4D” meat source, the four D’s stand for “Dead, Dying, Diseased or Disabled”, basically meat that is not acceptable for human consumption. You want the ingredients in your dog food to be the same grade and quality and come from the same sources used for human food. Some brands I recommend are
Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit

California Natural Lamb & Rice Small Bites

Innova EVO Dry Dog Food Small Bites

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Dog Food

These foods are highly recommended by pet owners and professional trainers, click on the links to read the rave reviews. They all contain whole, all-natural, human-grade ingredients, and do not contain by-products or preservatives like BHA, BHT, and Ethoxyquin.

For overall skin and coat health, I also recommend a supplement called
Missing Link Canine Formula.

.
Missing Link Canine Formula 1 lb.

It contains essential vitamins, minerals, and Omega fatty acids to maintain healthy skin and coat, good teeth, bones, joints, etc. It’s very easy to use, you just sprinkle some on the dog food. It’s just a good all-around supplement for holistic health.
